Story Time: Christmas Memories

Especially for those who like to think of Christmas past

Christmas is a time for family and friends to reconnect with each other and share time together, however, it doesn't always work out perfectly. Most people have a few tales from Christmas past of something going wrong or a hilarious antic. Growing up in the house I did, I have my fair share of entertaining stories.

Collapsing Christmas Tree

One of my earliest memories of Christmas probably isn't the most conventional of Christmas memories but a funny one nonetheless. Since I was not even 4 or 5 years of age I don't exactly recall what happened but as far as I can remember one minute I was playing with the Christmas tree and the next minute it was crashing down on top of me. Funny to look back on yes but for the traumatized child that was I counted my lucky stars that I had survived the attempt on my life by the less than Merry Christmas Tree

Missing Baby Jesus

The year is 2012, the 12-year-old me was setting up the Christmas decorations from the display pieces to the Christmas Tree that had previously attacked me. when it came to setting up the crib however we set up the Mary, Joesph, wise men, animals, angels basically all the main members bar one, that one was of course none other than the baby Jesus by far the most important person in the crib.

We searched the boxes, the floors even had another look in the attic but the baby Jesus was nowhere to be seen. We came to the conclusion that he had just gone home to spend time with his family for the holidays so we just had to make do with a lamb as the baby Jesus for this year. Funny enough who should return the very next year but only the manager child himself. He had risen once again.

Nans Last Christmas

I know I have written about this before but I simply could not talk about Christmas memories without talking about the one and only Ma Curran. December of 2006 was the last Christmas we celebrated with Nan Curran before her passing in August of the following year. despite it being her last Christmas we managed to capture one of her most iconic moments.

My brother was after getting a go-kart for Christmas and decided to bring it up to Nan's house on Christmas morning and of course, she was persuaded into driving the thing, all be it not very well.

Reflection

While it is nice to have this captured on video it does hit home how we can't all be together around the holidays, but although she may be gone it makes snippets like these all the more precious to have. Christmas is a very tough time of year for many people and another Christmas in covid doesn't help, but no matter where we may be or for whatever reasons we are apart, we can always look back on the fond memories of the good times we shared with our loved ones until we meet again, such memories that will never be taken from us. Just remember it is truly better to experience than it is to simply live.

So from me to you...

"Have a Very Merry Christmas and here's to all the best in 2022"
